WHAT IS AN EAP AND HOW DOES IT WORK?
An Employee Assistance Program is a pre-paid counseling program that works by providing assistance to employees so that they can return to their previous level of functioning or in some cases, a higher level of functioning. Many times, individuals who need assistance don’t know where to turn, lack the needed financial resources, or deny that a problem exists. An EAP solves all three problems.
We publicize the program by scheduling orientation meetings to familiarize employees with features of the program. Program confidentiality is emphasized and employees are given an opportunity to clarify any questions they might have.
There is no cost passed on to the employee. A monthly fee is negotiated in advance with the company so financial issues are not an obstacle for the employee. This is highly attractive feature for employees and serves to boost employee morale and foster goodwill toward the company.
At times, troubled employees are unaware of their problems and deny their existence. Through supervisor training provided by our staff, supervisors can be taught effective techniques to deal with declining work performance in a step-by-step proven process.
An EAP works because it provides employees the benefit of receiving professional counseling services to deal with their problems. Some of the problems presented originate in the workplace, but many problems stem from outside the workplace.
The important thing to remember is that personal problems affect work performance. Based on industrial research with EAP usage and benefits, a company can expect:
Improved Worker Productivity
Reduced utilization of medical benefits
Reduced substance abuse
Improved Worker Morale
Reduced number of grievances
Reduced threats of violence
Increased loyalty to the company
These changes can be far-reaching and dramatic. The cost savings to the company plus the benefits to employees is definitely a win-win outcome.
